Blessings in a Backpack-WB/KH is a program, run entirely by volunteers, that raises funds, orders, packs, and delivers to the schools, bags filled with six non-perishable meals to go home each weekend of the school year with the food insecure children in our school district. We service Doherty, Gretchko , Roosevelt, Scotch, and Sheiko Elementary Schools, West Bloomfield Middle School, West Bloomfield High School, Oakland Early College, and the Transition Center.
Together we can make the difference in the life of a child… because hunger does not take a break on the weekend!
In the heart of West Bloomfield School District, Blessing in a Backpack WB/KH continues to make a significant impact on the lives of local students facing food insecurity. On November 3, 2023, the organization hosted its annual Trivia Night fundraiser, and this year’s theme took everyone on a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s.
The event not only brought the community together but also successfully raised $33,000, a testament to the unwavering support and generosity of sponsors, donors, and dedicated volunteers. This remarkable achievement not only covers the organization’s food costs for the entire school year but also opens the door to enhancing weekly menus, ensuring students receive well-rounded and nutritious meals.
Our schools closed on March 13, 2020, and we no longer could send food bags home with our children. So, we reorganized and teamed with our School District’s Nutrition Department to pass out our Blessings bags at two Curb Side school sites in our district. Continue…
In a heartwarming collaboration, West Bloomfield- Keego Harbor Blessings in a Backpack is thrilled to announce a meaningful partnership with The Tom Kowalski Foundation. This alliance comes on the heels of a very generous donation from The Tom Kowalski Foundation’s “Killer Cares” event, held in December 2023 at The Lodge in Keego Harbor.
The Tom Kowalski Foundation, established in honor of a remarkable individual who dedicated much of his life to helping children in need, has been a steadfast supporter of students in the West Bloomfield/Keego Harbor school district for many years. Tom Kowalski’s legacy lives on through the foundation, which has consistently raised funds to address emergency needs and provide holiday assistance to local students.
