MICHIGAN MODEL

When starting a Blessings in a Backpack program you have the option to be under the National Blessings in a Backpack program or the Michigan Blessings in a Backpack.  The choice is yours to make.

With a special agreement with the National Blessings in a Backpack program, we have permission to use the Blessings in a Backpack name to oversee and support the Michigan programs which have selected to be organized under the Michigan Model.  The money raised for these Michigan programs remains in Michigan for the operational expenses of existing programs to expand the program to new schools.  The Michigan Model of Blessings in a Backpack from the Michigan Advisory Team down to the local level is 100% volunteers.  This allows us to maximize the money raised to feed school-age children on the weekends.

The Michigan Advisor Team is available to work closely with your committee to establish a program to feed children in the community.  We will ensure your program has the proper foundation and financial support to be successful.  Once the program is operational and children are being feed each week, we will assist your committee to establish community partners to maintain the existing schools and expand to additional schools within the community.  With being able to attend your meetings, we can answer any questions you have in real time so you can continue moving forward.

From the beginning the Michigan Menu was developed with a four-week rotation so the children have some variety in the food they are receiving each week.  The Michigan communities have also elected to pack for a few additional weeks when the children are on school breaks and not receiving the Free or Reduced Fee lunches.  The cost per child for an entire school year of weekend food is $140 for the Michigan Program.  We work closely with Meijer who provides the food for the program at a reduced cost.

Currently we are providing over one million meals each school year through the participating communities programs.
