Blessings in a Backpack – Brighton, MI is a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” program designed to help bridge the nutritional needs gap of children in the Brighton Area School District. Each week, we distribute backpacks filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend to students who qualify for the Federal Free & Reduced Lunch program. Currently, there are about 800 eligible children.
The goal of Blessings in a Backpack is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends which helps remove barriers to academic success.
The Brighton Blessings in a Backpack program started 2017. We are currently serving children in Junior Kindergarten through 6th grade. This serves Brighton’s four elementary schools (JK-4) and the intermediate school (5th & 6th). Our goal is to raise sufficient money each year to offer this program to all the schools within the Brighton Area School District.
LETTER CAMPAIGN-Each year Blessings in a Backpack-Brighton has been very successful in funding their program using the old fashion method of a direct ask by letter. In late July we sent out this year’s letters. 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR-provided many challenges for the Blessings in a Backpack-Brighton Steering Committee and the volunteers assist with the packing process. This did not stop us from feeding children each week during the school year. Read More…
$155 provides one child with food every weekend (6 meals) for an entire school year. Currently we are serving 100 eligible children, so $11,000 is needed!
Besides monetary donations we can always individuals, groups, or company’s employees who want to assist with packing. You can select to pack once, a few times a year, monthly, or as often as your schedule will allow. Packing takes approximately one hour. This is a great way to give back to the community but helping to feed hunger-insecure children.
